In this new study, the researchers focused on the ‘gut virome’, the collection of viruses in our gut. They analyzed the gut viromes of 176 individuals, including people over 100 years old (centenarians) from Japan. They compared these with the viromes of younger adults (over 18 years) and older individuals (over 60 years).

They discovered that centenarians had a richer and more varied collection of gut viruses, including some viral species not found in younger adults or older individuals. Notably, they identified viruses associated with a group of bacteria called Clostridia, which have previously been implicated in promoting gut health.

Furthermore, the gut virome of the centenarians displayed a shift towards more lytic activity, a term that refers to the ability of viruses to infect bacteria and often cause them to break open and die.

The researchers also found that the viruses in the guts of centenarians carry genes that help bacteria perform key steps in specific metabolic pathways. These genes aid in the conversion of methionine to homocysteine, sulfate to sulfide, and taurine to sulfide. This could lead to higher levels of microbial hydrogen sulfide, a gas that has been associated with maintaining the health of our gut lining and warding off harmful pathogens.

In simple terms, this means that the gut virome of centenarians might be aiding the ‘good’ bacteria in our gut, helping to maintain a healthier gut environment, and potentially contributing to the impressive longevity of these individuals.
