Unveiling Sucralose: Can this Popular Sweetener Cut Your Lifespan Short?

PubMed Source Sucralose-6-acetate, a structural analog and an impurity produced during the manufacturing of sucralose, was the focus of this investigation.

The researchers found that recent commercial samples of sucralose contained up to 0.67% of sucralose-6-acetate. This substance was also detected in fecal samples of a rodent model, hinting at the possibility of acetylation of sucralose in the intestines.

For the longevity-conscious, here’s why these findings matter: Sucralose-6-acetate showed signs of being genotoxic, a term referring to the damaging effects on a cell’s genetic material (DNA). This damage can potentially lead to mutations and even cancer. The substance was identified as clastogenic, which means it can produce DNA strand breaks. The possibility of sucralose-6-acetate leading to DNA instability aligns with the central theories of aging, that damage at the cellular and genetic level can accelerate the aging process and lead to age-related diseases.

The amount of sucralose-6-acetate found in just one sucralose-sweetened drink could far exceed the threshold of toxicological concern for genotoxicity, a worrisome finding that calls for further investigation.

The researchers employed the RepliGut® System to expose human intestinal epithelium to both sucralose and sucralose-6-acetate, followed by an RNA-seq analysis to observe changes in gene expression. Alarmingly, they found that sucralose-6-acetate significantly increased the expression of genes related to inflammation, oxidative stress, and even cancer. The gene with the highest expression was the metallothionein 1 G gene (MT1G), which is often associated with cellular protection from oxidative damage.

Furthermore, both sucralose and sucralose-6-acetate were found to impair intestinal barrier integrity, a critical part of our body’s defense system against harmful substances entering the bloodstream. This impairment might lead to increased intestinal permeability, often referred to as “leaky gut”, which has been linked to various health issues, including chronic inflammation and autoimmune diseases.

Lastly, the study found that sucralose-6-acetate inhibits two members of the cytochrome P450 family, enzymes essential for the metabolism of various molecules and chemicals within cells.

Where is sucralose found?

Sucralose, popularly known under the brand name Splenda, is found in a wide array of food and beverages due to its non-caloric sweetening power. Some common examples include:

  1. Diet Drinks: Sucralose is commonly used in diet sodas, diet iced teas, and other low-calorie or zero-calorie beverages.
  2. Baked Goods: Many light or reduced-calorie cookies, cakes, and pastries use sucralose as a sugar substitute.
  3. Breakfast Foods: Some light or diet yogurts, breakfast cereals, and protein bars use sucralose for sweetness.
  4. Candy and Chewing Gums: Many sugar-free candies, mints, and chewing gums also contain sucralose.
  5. Sauces and Syrups: It’s found in low-sugar or sugar-free versions of condiments, salad dressings, and syrup.
  6. Meal Replacements and Protein Shakes: Many of these diet-focused products use sucralose to add sweetness without adding calories.
  7. Pre-packaged Meals: Some reduced-calorie or “light” versions of pre-packaged meals use sucralose.

It’s important to read product labels carefully if you’re trying to avoid sucralose, as it can be found in many unexpected places.

The significance of these findings should not be underestimated, as they raise valid questions about the safety and regulatory status of sucralose. While this study doesn’t necessarily mean that we should immediately stop using sucralose, it serves as a stark reminder that even substances perceived as harmless can have potential health impacts that are yet to be fully understood.

From a longevity perspective, reducing or eliminating the consumption of artificial sweeteners such as sucralose might be a prudent step to take. While further research is necessary, this study strengthens the idea that promoting natural, wholesome, and nutrient-dense foods is a promising strategy for maintaining optimal health and potentially extending our lifespan.
